10 Ways the World Could End

I just ran across this really cool video of a talk given by Steven Petranek at the TED conference. He describes 10 ways in which humanity could immediately end or become vastly affected. He also describes what we can do to prevent all these things. The talk was given a few years back but it’s still just as relevant if not more so today. It’s about a half hour long but worth watching I’d say.

Some things I learned that really struck me are it would take 300-500 years to terraform Mars so we should get started. Also we are just as likely to die from a really big asteroid as we are from a passenger airline crash.

Here’s his list of how the world could end. It’s kind of ordered from least likely to most likely.

10. We Lose the Will to Survive

9. Alien Invasion

8. Ecosystem Collapses

7. Particle Accelerator Mishap

6. Biotech Disaster

5. Reversal of the Earth’s Magnetic Field

4. Giant Solar Flares

3. New Global Epidemic

2. We Meet a Rogue Black Hole

1. A Really Big Asteroid Heads for Earth

And the Lifeblood Stops Flowing

So my roommate forgot to sign up for internet and I’ll be without it for a little while. I have no idea how I will survive, I was barely cognizant before 1990 anyway. Not having internet for a short while has really made me realize how dependant/addicted I am to it. I wonder if that’s good or bad, I guess we’ll see.

Oh well I have lots of papers to read for school anyway, but I have to go to the stupid computer lab that I try to avoid to get my fix so I probably won’t be posting for a few days. Wish me luck as I try to go without internet for more than 24 hours…

Guy Sells Open Office on eBay, LGPL Seen Crying in Corner

So I just looked on eBay and look what I came across.

Open Office On eBay

With this description line

OPEN OFFICE 2007 PRO SUITE MICROSOFT WORD EXCEL + MORE!

Yeah that’s right. Someone is selling Open Office on eBay. Yes, the same Open Office you can download for free right now from the Open Office site. The same Open Office I just linked to about 50 times.

First I was struck by how asinine this is, then I was struck by how stupid the people buying this is [Ed: are - wow a grammar mistake while calling other people stupid, I’m a freakin’ genius lol] as it had 25 bids and sold for $61. Then I went to check this guys feedback and it looks as though he’s done this several times now and has almost all POSITIVE FEEDBACK WTF?

ebay open office

The weird thing about it is that since Open Office is under the LGPL this might even be legit, I don’t know my knowledge of open source licenses is fairly weak let me know if I’m wrong. Maybe this guy is actually a genius. Who knows?

Fall Geek TV Lineup

Looks like us geeks are starting to get our props from Hollywood. Many geek shows are becoming more and more successful and a lot of new ones are coming out this season. Wired has written up a list of reviews of new geek shows for this season. I’ll probably be checking out at least a couple of these. This may be a list of only new shows I’m not sure but one show that’s definitely missing if not is Heroes. That show is amazing and I geek out every time it comes on!

Dying Professers Last Lecture

I just ran across this video of Dr. Randy Pausch’s last lecture. He was dying of cancer and had one last change to give a lecture about what he wanted people to know. It’s really touching and I’d recommend checking it out here’s a short version of the video.

A longer version along with the rest of the parts of the lecture can be found here at youtube.

Making Money with the Million Dollar Wiki

million dollar wiki

Some of you who remember the Million Dollar Homepage and it looks like someone may have come up with an equally ingenious way to make a million bucks. The Million Dollar Wiki is a wiki (imagine that) that is selling every topic page on the wiki for $100. The founder hopes to sell 10,000 pages and make a million dollars (or more since he’ll keep selling pages after that I’m sure.)

Normally this wouldn’t be much of a big deal but this place is really picking up steam with both John Chow and Shoemoney buying pages and blogging about it, it’s really picking up steam now and he’s already sold nearly 1000 pages. You also get resale rights on any pages you buy once the goal has been met, which for some of the premium pages can turn into quite a profit if this thing gets as big as it has potential to. I think this is a really genius idea because once people buy these pages on the wiki they effectively become a marketing force for the wiki itself, it’s the sort of thing that can really take on a life of it’s own.

I even bought a page of my own on Foreign Exchange to give some info on what forex is as well as get people to sign up for a forex account with Easy Forex. The affiliate program for this is run through Forex Affiliate which seems good and provides recurring payments for referrals. I’ll keep you posted on whether this thing turns a profit for me or not.

John Chow is also running a blog contest involving the wiki, basically you can blog about the contest and/or buy pages to enter. If you want to buy a page I definitely recommend checking out John Chow’s contest page because he also has a coupon code where you can get $10 off a page purchase. Use coupon code JohnChow to save $10 on a page.

Man dies after 3-day gaming binge - CNN.com

Man dies after 3-day gaming binge - CNN.com

Another guy dies of exhaustion after gaming for too long. Though the cause of death appears to be exhaustion the story doesn’t make it clear whether we can blame gameing addiction for this. I say it’s just as likely that the guy had insomnia and games killed the boredom that comes with insomnia.

Sex Quenches Thirst of Female Beetles

Sex Quenches Thirst of Female Beetles - Yahoo News

So this is just crazy I’m not even sure I should describe it here but basicly these beetles get really thirsty and have sex so that they can drink the male beatles ejaculate and quench their thirst. (I couldn’t make this stuff up people!)

Sometimes I wish humans were more like beetles. You know so we could fly and stuff…
